1950s’ Irish history came alive through the lens

Rediscover the history

People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them

—James Baldwin

National Museum of Ireland decorative and History I Collins Barracks, Benburb Street, Dublin 7 held photo exhibition, Ireland in Focus: Photographing the 1950’s to celebrate the works of three photographers from France and North America. The exhibition will be held from 21st November,2019 to April 2020. The photography highlights the Irish history of 1950’s, showing the live hood of the people during that period of time.

The exhibition namely Ireland in Focus: Photographing the 1950’s captured the soul and essence of the people during that era. It’s the collections of these people that was created during the time where it was generally regarded as hardest decades in the twentieth-century in Ireland. The exhibition highlights the three photographer’s style of the portraying Ireland from the places they once visited. Among the three photographers, Henri-Cariter-Bresson’s photography was showcase. He is a world-renowned photographer who completed two photographic missions in Ireland. One was from Harper’s Bazaar magazine when he arrived in Dublin in June 1962. He travelled a lot of places in Ireland like Dublin, Kildare, Westmeath, Galway, Kerry, Cork, Tipperary. Kilkenny, Waterfond and Wexford. In the exhibition, his images include like landscapes, street scenes, portraits and public events that captured the timeless pieces from 1950s’ Ireland.

The Paris-Based Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson loans over fifty images to the National Museum of Ireland for this exhibition. Many are exclusive, never shown before pictures and there are selected photographs from the photographic collections from the 1950’s along with other works of the photographer. There were the works from another renowned American photographer, Dorothea Lange who had travelled the Ireland in 1954 during the assignment on the Life magazine. Her works had a collection of photographs from County Clare. There, she took more than three thousand pictures which is a part of this exhibition. The Paris-based American Anthropologist, Robert Cresswell’s work was also showcase in this exhibition. He lived over a year in Kinvara, County Galway during 1955 and 1956 that was shown through his photography. He took over four hundred photographs in the place where he lived that includes a set of Kodakchrome Slides that was shown to the audiences as they pace towards other works of the photographers. His photography was taken as a part of his fieldwork and that captured the daily life of the rural community. He had published his finding on the based of what now we call as a part of seminal anthropological study of rural community, Une Communaute Rurale de l’lrlande.

The pictures range from the collection of day to day of the people minding their business where each photographer have captured the beautiful memoir of the old times and the way they carried out their framing to bonding with their families. You can really see such artistic style in a photography like that of the one particular picture by Robert Cresswell’s Corpus Christi Procession, Kinvara 1955-56 where you can feel as if you are inside that portrait of children marching down the street of Kinvara.

My Firsthand experience for a news report in the street of Dublin

Image caption : Man is showing poster of the protest Image credit: Sukrity Sharma

On the 2nd of November, 2019 ,I went to the protest despite of the weather because it is very serious situation at the moment in Dublin.  When I arrived there, the people were slowly gathering for the protest at General Post Office. They were from the People from Profit party, locals , a news reporter, a member of city councilor as well as students who document the protest for their studies. The protest was especially targeted to the bystanders and the youths. They wanted to make people aware. There was a news reporter named Tom Douglas from the radio station called Dublin’s Q102 FM. He was covering the news by pre-recording the interviews of the protesters. It was for a news bulletin. I interviewed the protesters who are the member of the People from Profit party in which he said that they are there because of what the financial Minister said and put forward; joining this protest is the way to show the disapproval of the Minister’s words. I interviewed the city councilor who is extremely supportive. She marched all the way till the end in the rain. She was generous enough to speak her opinion about the homeless crisis.  I learnt the condition of the homeless crisis is huge than what I thought. Despite of the Ireland being considered as a develop country; there are a huge problem of housing and homeless.

I got this opportunity to learn about the ethic of Journalism by observing a professional journalist on how to take an interview. However, I didn’t got the opportunity to interview more people as they were in rush with the protest due to bad weather. In spite of that, I have to keep in mind that weather will always be challenging for a journalist because I found difficult to keep up with them during the march on the street and I was all wet. But, my persistent and determination for a news report. In terms of writing this report, headline is one which took much time to create one. It was not easy to remember all the details of interviews vividly. So, I pre-recorded the interview so it will be easy be to write on my report.  Overall, I got an amazing experience of being in action as a Journalist.

Content writer is the best job you can think for if you are want to take your passion for your writing to the next level. You choose your own design , your writing style and the best part is you can make living out of it. All you need to do is write ! write! and write! Don’t hesitate and postpone your writing. The more you write, the more you get your audience interested.

There will be times when you are not sure about it. If that is the case, ask your colleague to read it and they will give you advice. Another the fact is that DEADLINES ! yes ! it is scary even I find myself scary. When you are a content writer , deadline should always be your priority . It is important because the SEO of the website demands you to make a more content so that you can make it to the top.

First of all, first you need to generate ideas and lists of the important ideas or keywords, you want to write including what your audience and clients demands from you. Take a deep breathe and roughly write ideas and then start with an introduction after that come to the main point. Don’t run around the circle because that not what your audience wants . After all this is done, PROOFREADING ! is must because you are going to post something that will be seen online. You won’t want to make a fool out of your simple grammar mistakes , will you ?

The best possible way to be a content writer is to practice your writing and write some more.

My first experience when I was covering a court news

On 6th December, 2019 at 8:30 am, the lecturers gave us instruction and send us to different locations. We had to make a news report in order to submit before the deadline. I was sent to the criminal justice court, Phoenix Park where I was told to cover a news report on a sentence case. When I arrived there, it was holding many other cases before the hearing of the case I need to write on. Around 11:40 pm, the case opened for hearing. It was my first-time ever going to the court for a hearing. I was thrilled to see the procedure towards a hearing .

The Juries of the court first have to take an oath before opening the case for hearing. Unfortunately, I faced a challenge along the way. The judge decides hold the case till Monday at 11:30 am. I was not alone to cover this case, I shortly join my colleague who was to cover the same case. I asked my friend call our lecturer and discuss what will be the next step. He suggested to go to the museum which held a photography exhibition.

We rush to the location because it was almost pass our deadline to submit the news to our lecturer. Unfortunately, we got lost for three hours and I panicked. But, I told myself that worrying doesn’t help so we again tried to go back to the right direction and we made it finally . However, time was running out and we had two and half hours left in our hands. So, I took pictures of the exhibition and some details about it. Since it was one way towards city Centre, we had to walk for 45 minutes to catch a bus to the college. I finished my report within the nick of time.

In the end, I got the experience of the court hearings and struggle to keep up with the time to cover a story.

PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE OF THE STUDENT WHILE APPEARING IN BOARD EXAMS (+2 STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE) : Research

During my studies in my bachelor degree, I had to do an academic research like I am doing in my Master’s program. So, this a glimpse of my finished work and the findings of my research.

This was my thesis “psychological state of the student while appearing for board exams. (+2 students perceptive)” focuses on identifying the factors that mostly effects psychological well-being of the students and how it effects in the preparation for the board exam as well as if the college provides any such facilities to overcome the effects.

Such group of the college students goes under psychological factors that effect the state of the student while appearing for the board exam due to the examinations, their self-expectations, competition with the others, their parent’s expectations, pressure from college and pervious school life and their family background causing academic stress and anxiety. But, however, it is not that all the students are effected as some of them complete their college without any pressure. They take this pressure as a motivation and encouragement to work hard. This is only possible with the support of teachers, friends and family guidance.

A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used in the current study –. Surveys were completed by the college students. During the survey, majority of students reported that they are mainly effect from factors like the examinations, their self-expectations, competition with the others, their parent’s expectations, pressure from college and pervious school life and their family background causing academic stress and anxiety among the students. In a detailed central section of thesis provides vague information on the psychological phenomena with the factors contributing the cause and effect, from the theory and from the context of Nepal perspective. Here, the thesis draws on a number of sources from books, journals and other resources on the information. In conclusion , the thesis argues the issues is an essential problem that should be deal with as they are the future pillars for the development of the country .This thesis hopes to offer all the future researchers useful information regarding the issue and thus make a small contribution to improving the general standard of bachelor’s  thesis.

Findings

The Findings precisely deal with the analyzed data accumulated during the research and gives overview of the analytical situation of the area of the study. It closely indicates the situational context of the study and gives way forward to the recommendations. It is based on the responses of the 110 respondents who filled the questionnaire during the field survey.

Some of the findings of the study can be given as follows:

  • It seems all the respondents represent the college students; stated as the student who attends the education for the Higher Secondary Education in Nepal, under the Higher Secondary Education Act which aims to prepare skilled human power for the development of the country. Most of them were from 11thstandard.
  • The respondents mainly represent Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.
  • The respondents mainly represent Brahmin, Chettri and Newar.
  • Many respondents attend the day College and studies at least 1 to 2 hours and 2 to 3 hours at home. While there were only few respondents who doesn’t study at all.
  • Most of the respondents are happy to go to college and do not have any complains about their college , as most of them are encourage  by all factors i.e. good teaching style, playing games , good friends circle , for the sake of bright future and  friendly teachers . Likewise, there are some who are encouraged to go to college because of good friend circle and for sake of bright future. But however, few of them answered with multiple factors that encouraged them to go to college.
  • Most of the respondents seem to have excellent relationship between their parents. In which most of them always share about their exams with their parents and some do, when they are ask about it.
  • The respondents seem to study their subject matters on their own choice rather than forced due to their parents’ will.
  • Many the respondents seem to have 5-6 subjects that need to be studied in their courses, whereas some have more than 6 subjects. In which, most of them find subjects like physics, mathematics and chemistry difficult to study. However, they do not get homework every day.
  • The respondents face an effect of time management and the attitude of the students in the preparation for the board exam.
  • It seems that respondents are mostly affected by the academic stress during the board exam, while some thinks that it is mostly affected by anxiety and other factors like self-concentration,disturbance,self-esteem / self –confidence of students , studying the subjects only  during the time of  exam , addiction to gadgets , time management , teachers etc. However, few of them answered with multiple factors that mostly affect them during the board exam.
  • It seems respondents face academic stress and anxiety during the board exam.
  • It seems that most of the respondents overcome these factors while appearing for board exam  through counseling with the teachers and the family for their suggestions , by studying hard , studying from the syllabus ,  managing time to study before the exam starts  , taking  small  break from time to time , taking tuition, studying daily , self – motivating oneself and  having positive attitude towards the  exam .
  • The respondents seem to have a satisfactory level of relationship with their teacher in which they sometimes give revision classes as well as syllabus to them for the board exam.
  • It seems many respondents sometimes discuss about their education with their family, who seems to expect a lot from their grades after giving their board exam. In which many have confident that they will fulfill their expectation i.e. scoring good marks.
  • Most of the respondents are affected by the factor of self-expectation and exam pressure while appearing for board exam. However, some of them are affected by the multiple factors while appearing for the board exam.
  • The respondents seems to have motivational classes to overcome these factors which are : bringing guest lecturers for inspirational speech , providing revision classes, teachers providing solution/counseling to overcome these factors in value classes as well as  during the assembly  and programs relating to overcoming these factors .
  • Many respondents do not agree the fact that boys and girls differ girls differ significantly with respect to academic stress and examination- related anxiety, which show that they are equally effect by these factors.
  • It seems that respondents think there should be an understanding of the parents and teachers performance associated with minimizing academic stress, anxiety and parental pressure in educational level.
  • Thus, the most of the respondents thinks that there is a psychological effect of these factors on the mental health in the student while appearing for the board exam.

Conclusion

It is evident that most of the student faces psychological problem from these factors whether they are a bright student or not. Learning is an active process of questioning, exploring and understanding rather than memorizing facts and figures only for the sake of exam and due to these factors. It is important for the teachers and parents to understand and support their child to overcome the effects that hamper their lives .It is also important for colleges to make the students facilitated with services that makes the student’s psychological state filled with self-esteem and positive attitude towards the exam. As students are the young pillars for future development of the country, we must provide that necessary support and encouragement to make these pillar a strong one.

The main source of the pressure faced by the children came from the examinations, their self-expectations, competition with the others, their parent’s expectations, pressure from college and school life and their family background respectively. Due to this pressure the students had an obsession with grades, cheated in college and over extended oneself. The pressure is also not good for their development because they are not enjoying what they are studying but are forced to do so.

The answer to my research question “how such factors do effect the student’s exam?” in which the result from my research shows that it is not all the student face these factors. Some of them seem to sail through it. This is because the hard work and the effort that put in and gets the needed encouragement and motivation from their family. The environment that they study is designed to create a hardworking atmosphere to their student’s lives. Even though, nowadays colleges provide motivational classes or counseling to the students occasionally, there is still an increase number of the student that is affected by these factors time and again. There is lot to be done in this sector for the improvement of the students who are the pillars for the future development of the country.

Since, the research is a way to understand how such factors do effect the psychological state of the student during the exam. The researcher also asked the opinions of the students to reduce such factors in which according to them, the student should be facilitate services from the college on the regular basis to overcome these factors. There should be a balanced level of understanding between students and teachers as well as with parents. As, this is important for a student to have a good and supportive environment to grow. The studies also suggest that there is discrimination among students who are judged according to their grades by the teachers, which should be reduced. Much of the importance is given to the theoretical facts than the practical knowledge that makes the atmosphere for obtaining grades more intense and competitive causing these factors to arise. Likewise, through this study , it have suggest that due to tradition of obtaining  higher grades that prevails in the society’s cultural structure among the students , also make these factors to arise . The problem of time management with increase in the length of the syllabus for the preparation is also causing a great deal for the student to suffer from these factors.

How to focus your camera and frame it ?

The video was filmed at the Grand Canal in Clanbrassil Street Upper, Harold’s Cross Road, Dublin 8. I shoot the scene from the Robert Emmett Bridge. A single-arch bridge that is over the Grand Canal. I chose a full shoot frame which shows the beautiful canal where the River Liffey flows. It says the canal joins with the main river Liffey that flows from the center of the Dublin.

I used the Flimicpro application from my iPhone. I first started by dragging the square focus reticle to set my focus point on the canal. Then I dragged my circular point on the view for a proper exposure shot. The view was overexposed due to the cloudy weather so I adjust the exposure reticle by 39 by swiping the left slide. After that, I locked my white balance by choosing the daylight option for my shot from the imaging icon in the lower left.

After all the settings were done, I started recording up to 1 minute. In the video, the weather was cloudy and windy at the same time. You can hear the wind throughout the video. On the riversides of the Canal, we can see the Dublin’s day to day life that beautifully blends with nature. The roads on both sides were busy with cars. Few people were walking by the canal. While I was shooting, I captured a moment of this beautiful swan swimming in the canal that made the view more stunning. You can hear the busy workers and cars passing by in the video.

” I volg myself ” : First hand experience

Vlog myself and talked about my experiences of living and studying here in Dublin, Ireland. The scene was shot at my room because I thought that audio quality will be better than shooting outside. I chose a close shot for the frame in this video because it will be able to focus mainly into the interviewee’s emotional aspect through this interview. It will help to convey the message of the video’s subject matter clearly. In the frame, there is an adjustment of the top wall composition where the wall slightly rides above my head.  I used the Flimicpro application from my iPhone. I first started by dragging the square focus reticle to set my focus point on my face. Then I dragged my circular point on the view for a proper exposure shot. On that day, it was raining. My room didn’t give much light so I adjust the exposure reticle by 410, swiping the left slide. After that, I locked my white balance in an auto-locked on record for my shot from the imaging icon in the lower-left that shows AWB in the orange color. The temperature was 4517k whereas TINT shows +6k in my white balance After all the settings were done, I started recording up to 1 minute and 58 seconds.  The lesson that I learnt was of many. First, you need to be persistent on taking video unless you got that right frame. From this exercise, I realise that without a proper technical knowledge, one cannot master the correct way to film with a proper lighting. Second, in the real scenario, I have to step up from my shyness and interview one as interviewing is the essence of Journalism.

Problems of high living cost for International student

It is the most important issue right now in Dublin.  But, it mostly affect international student like me. According to the report in Journal, Fraud, high rents and no accommodation are the issues for international students who are studying at Irish colleges and universities. The report also interviewed of one the student who commutes from Belfast three times a week because of the high rents in the city. Not only that, some international students have had experience fraud. According to European Commission-funded research by HousErasmus+ states that about 30% of international students had experienced some kind of fraud while staying here, it’s the highest level in Europe. I want to know what, why and when did the price of the accommodation hit the sky all of the sudden. I also if this governmental propaganda that have influence the rise of the price. I know it is not that such a new area to cover a story but I want to approach from the International student’s point of view. I will approach local people who used to be an international student, now they live here permanently. Then, compare differences of now and then. I will also add some clips related to this topic i.e. if there is any governmental propaganda behind it. I think this is my way to approach my documentary. This story will have different voice of students who are currently studying, local people and myself. The students will be from two colleges so that the show will have varieties. As, for the local people, I will survey them on the street. There will be three questions for each of them respectively. The question contains 3Ws according to my above approach. It starts with the viewer’s discretion advised and background facts about the living expense in Dublin in which the sources and statistics will be from online, books and some audio clips about this matter. The music will be minimum as it is not related to art and culture. In the second act, I will have interview with the students who are recently studying. In the third act, I interview to local people who used to an international student, now living and working permanently. Their transition from being an international student to a citizen of this country will be added to first act. In the end of the show, my voice will become the narrator where I will point out what, why and when did the price rose from the interviews. Ask the listeners to share your views on what they think about this issue and what an we do to solve this problem. For this, I will use the application called “Voice Record” and pre-record the voices of my interviewee. Then, I will structure my documentary along with my voice narration. I will use online and books for research and reference for facts. The audio clips will be from news about the subject that could a depth understand of the condition of international student living in a high cost rent or some political propaganda of the government. But, However, I will get the consent of my interviewee to talk about any sensitive issues during the pre- recordings.
